Hebrew tradition of archangel Michael as the protector of Israel, Book of Daniel

Is anyone familiar enough with this tradition to expand upon it?

It is my understanding as a child that the Archangel Michael, and for that matter, the Archangel Gabriel were entities that were called upon during times of desperate relief from the enemy. The Christian idea of a hansom man with wings of gold is misleading. Their sole purpose was to bring utter destruction to the opposition.
Thanks Tova. Did Gabriel and Michael have different functions? And would the Jewish people have called upon them specifically or prayed directly to Hashem?
