Dear Friends of SWW,

I am sure you have all heard of this by now and am posting this to hear your views. I think it would make a great discussion for those in this Synagogue. What say you?

MONROE, Ohio — A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm Monday night and burned to the ground, police said.

The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m., Monroe police dispatchers said.

The sculpture, 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way his arms were raised, as though reaching out to catch a football. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained early Tuesday.

The fire spread from the statue to an adjacent amphitheater but was confined to the attic area, and no one was injured, police Chief Mark Neu said. The fire department would release a monetary damage estimate Tuesday, he said.

Travelers on Interstate 75 often were startled to come upon the huge statue by the roadside, but many said America needs more symbols like it. So many people stopped at the church campus that church officials had to build a walkway to accommodate them.

The 4,000-member, nondenominational church was founded by former horse trader Lawrence Bishop and his wife. Bishop said in 2004 he was trying to help people, not impress them, with the statue. He said his wife proposed the Jesus figure as a beacon of hope and salvation and they spent about $250,000 to finance it.

Tried to find a psalm that I remembered that says the idol's are like the people who serve them in other words do nothing. The idol's don't laugh, cry, work, sleep, travel or get out of the rain. Does anyone know when the Washington Monument was built? Is this Why the politicians don't do any thing now a days.

The Horse trader and his wife could have better spent the 250,000.00 on kindness acts of Charity

Yirmeyahu 2; 1-5 The word of Adonai came to me: Go and shout in the ears of Yerushalayim that this is what Adonai says:
I remember you devotion when you were young;
how , as a bride, you loved me;
how you followed me through the desert,
through a land not sown.

Israel is set aside for Adonai,
the first fruits of his harvest;
all who devour him will incur guilt; evil wil befall them" says Adonai.

Here the word of Adonai, House of Ya'akov
and all the families in the house of Isra'el;
here is what Adonai says:

What did your ancestors find wrong with me,
to make them go so far away from me,
to make them go after nothings
and become themselves nothings?

This seems familiar...1 Sam 5:4

And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
It should come as no surprise to us when we hear of such things. The plagues of Egypt were a judgement against their false gods. As we know from the Prophets, idolatry always brought judgement. It showed the futility of man's thinking that there was life and power in the works of his hands and the idols of his heart. Hosea tells us that Ephraim is "ADDICTED" to idols....Hosea 4:17 (JPS) We see this in global christianity with the JC idol. I think we need to see more of this type of judgement against these idols and to highlight the squandering of the funds these false priests have fleeced from the gullible.

Hear! Hear! I run an orphanage and we sure could have used that 250 G !!! I think it interesting that Jesus paralleled himself to the Bronze image that Moses made. Even though it was something that God did that image became a stumbling block of idol worship and had to be destroyed as such. 2 kings 18 4! Now for Sao Paul Brazil...
They could put up a sign:

honestly, I simply dont know. I could claim its an act of God punishing idol worship.. but then i would have to apply that same standard to when Jews get killed or synagouges get destroyed by "Acts of God"...

however, it does seem a waste of money.. yet,, do YOU drive a 1996 caravan woth $500 or less my van gets me from a to b, does a car really NEEEED? to do more than that? or did you just spin 10 grand, 30 grand or more on a new vehicle that you actually dont need? to you, or me it might seem a bit much, but to their budget it might be pocket change.
I ride a bike every where and don't own a car. But a vehicle is useful regardless. A Styrofoam Jesus is not. A car provides reliable transport which is necessary in our cultures. It transports goods it is a form of a servant that has function, use and needs to be trusted. But the prices paid for them can be steep no doubt.
The act of God issue, it is hard. Some times these 'acts of God' are merely when good men refuse to act or wicked men do. One 'act' God has done is given responsibility to mankind.
If that was pocket change.. some one look under the cushions on the sofa! It would feed us for years
How come you have such a new car, Jeff? ;-D
...my '93 Dakota only has 220,000 miles on it.

My Dakota would have a lot more miles -
but I do like John & ride my bike to work on sunny days.

On the days it rains I don't ride my bike...
...So I guess "no bike days" are also an "Act Of God".

Unless the govt. has been seeding clouds over Iowa...

(In which case "no bike days" are no longer an "Act of God",
but an evil plot by the New World Order...
...to wear out my Dakota)
