For several years I have taught an entire college course on John the Baptizer/Dipper (Yochanan Ha Matbil). There is a lot of material on my university Web site of a historical nature, see in particular this link, but there are a few others as well…

Rabbi Yochanan Levine replied to Joanna Garrett's discussion 'John the Baptist' in the group Historical Jesus
We know from Scripture that there was a direct association between Y'shua and Yochanan the Immerser (John the Baptist) and the Essene Brotherhood. Scripture is clear that Yochanan was an Essene and that Y'shua was a P'rushim (a…

Tamla, I like your last post as it really uncovers the essence of what you were really asking in your original question. It's a universal question and if we're honest we're all asking that same question, who am I and where do I…

James, you have often remarked that David never really spoke of Jospeh with you. It's been my experience when dealing with members of "secret societies" that they never reveal themselves (just like the ancient Joseph) until the time…

Joanna, Kudos to you for your focus on Joseph, a character who should be truly remembered as a key part of the Horowitz Saga that I had never given enough attention to. I know you have since found more about him, his life, and some of his ideas and…

In many ways it seemed to me that this year's UIWU conference was an unspoken tribute to "Joseph" and the great lineage of the tribe of the Joseph of Egypt. The theme of this year's conference honored the underground stream of…

A Tribute to Joseph on the 70th aniversary of their reunion.

Last year I attended my first UIWU conference.  I must have received an invitation as a result of having purchased one of James' books I suppose. I certianly didn't know what to expect nor did I have any idea about Lost Tribes and such.  I was intrigued by James' own story and how he had been drawn back to Jerusalem some years ago, and had discovered a possible connection for himself as perhaps of the lineage of one of the Lost Tribes. Having heard the call he explored  possible organizations…See More

The Jesus Dynasty and Dynastic marriages

Dr. Tabor makes a compelling case for the "dynastic" nature of the family of Jesus, using the discoveries at Talpiot to support his theory. I am curious about the possibility of a "dynastic marriage" though. Dynastic marriages are usually arranged between two tribes or countries as a way to form a "peace treaty." According to Dr. Tabor, the primary function of Messiah would be the restoration of the house of Israel. If Jesus was a Messiah, and I believe was, then this Mariamene at Talpiot must…See More

Terri, if we are descendants from the tribes of Jospeh and this remnant claims to be the sole remaining connection, I wonder why we haven't, as a group, made contact with them. Instead we seek to align ourselves with the Jews, which sounds a…

You are probably right Joanna, David seemed to have a real heart for disparate groups. The problem of course are the centuries of prejudice and exclusion. What is really interesting though is on the academic side of things there is great interest…

Joanna, so nice to see a picture of you! It will have to be when you get back from the beach if that is ok with you. Then I can come on a weekend and won't be so rushed. I would love to meet your friend also. The more the merrier for lunch or dinner as far as I am concerned. Let me know when you get back from the beach. I'm working this weekend. I will have the next four weekends off after that. Where are you at in the pic with all the flowers. Do ya'll have a Farmers Market? I love Farmers Markets! Let me know when you return. I'm looking forward to it.

Thank you Joanna. I will. I work the next two weekends and I get up at 0430 during the week. When I work the weekend, I have a day off during the week. That might be an option. I would like to expand my circle of friends. I read some of you post and you really do have a good view of life. When are good hours for you. I flew out of and back in to Charlotte when I went to New York in Jan.. I don't know much about it but it seems like and interesting town.

Shalom Joanna,
Thank you for challenging me to explain the Aviv to you.
Anciently the spotting of the aviv was the method used to determine when the new year began in Israel. This was before the dispersion and before the Jews began to use a calculated calendar.
The word Aviv, or also Abib, is found in the following scripture passages.
Deut 16:1 Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover of YAHWEH your Elohim, because in the month of Abib he brought you out of Egypt by night.
Exod 23:15-16 "Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt. "No one is to appear before me empty-handed.
The definition of Abib is found in Strong’s Dictionary and in Brown Driver Briggs Lexicon below
24 'abiyb (aw-beeb');from an unused root (meaning to be tender); green, i.e. a young ear of grain; hence, the name of the month Abib or Nisan: (Strong’s)
24 'abiyb-from an unused root (meaning to be tender);1) fresh, young barley ears, barley 2) month of ear-forming, of greening of crop, of growing green Abib, the month of the Exodus and the Passover (March or April)(BDB)
In actual practice, the barley grain must be ripe enough to be harvested within the next month.
Every year in Israel, the Karaites send a group out during the 12th month, along with a specialist in the barley grain, to inspect different fields of barley to determine if the barley is in the state of abib. If so, then the next new moon will usher in the new year, the month of Aviv. From that new moon we can count 14 days to get the accurate date for Pesach.
The picture I have posted is one of several that was sent out by the Karaites after this year’s aviv search.
It is a beautiful picture and during this season I am using it as my computer home page.
For more information, I suggest going to http://www.karaite-korner.org/abib.shtml
It was great getting to share this information with you.

Shalom, Tami
