(written to a Christian friend today)
Dear David:
You referred to Eve being made from a “bone” of Adam (Genesis 2:22).
All ribbing aside, this is plain wrong, dangerously so.
Let me let you in on a dirty little secret.
The צלע TSeL[A]h of Adam from which Eve was formed was NOT A BONE.
You are reading a mistranslation of God's word by a bunch of evil clowns.
Yes, the serial killer type.
Sure, even the so-called Jewish Publication Society version translates this as “rib.” These fake Joo “scholars” were imitating the only version of Torah they can read well, and venerate: the KJV. They are perpetuating the Christian Original Sin of mistranslating God’s Torah to fit their twisted views.
The original mistranslators were not simply ignorant “bible scholars.” They knew very well what they were doing. They were creating an “old” testament. It was to be used as a Christian text, as if the Divine poetry and infinite entendres of the Hebrew Bible would be continued in the prosaic, artless, error-laden “New” testament.
Male chauvinism is institutionalized in their twisting of Genesis, as is slavery and Jew-hatred.
This is why they allowed sick racism by Mathew* to be called Scripture, and why they didn't discard Martin Luther after he wanted Jews annihilated.
* From Mat the knife: A) Pharisees (read: Jews) are liars and hypocrites.
B) liars and hypocrites go to the fiery furnace
C) -- logical inference of A +B -- Jews must go to the furnaces of Auschwitz.
Yes, you could finesse this away as mere historical rivalry. But there are 6 million reasons why the Greek Bible can never be forgiven for sanctifying hate.
Which side of the barbed wire do want to be on?
Look at a concordance. The word translated as “rib”, the 'bone" you refer to in Genesis 2:22 , is never rendered a bone elsewhere. Your translators are either stupid or evil, or both. The word is better rendered "side", as in aspect. The Genesis text makes clear that Man was both male and female before they were separated – Genesis 1:27. Once, we were yin and yang together. In the image of our One God. Our two natures, aspects or sides were separated. As were light and dark, waters and dryness… even our one Edenic language got diversified. Man and woman are equal under our Creator, in the Hebrew Bible.
Christian scholars don't like that idea. Too feminist. Too egalitarian. The Greek Bible made male chauvinism, domestic and legal, an institution for millennia. To the text-twisters, women are merely from a rib of the superior male. It was far too dangerous to let bible readers think that women might be more than mindless, servile homemakers. The diversity thing is subversive to an evangelizer. He wants a homogeneous, catholic (universal) world. Like Nimrod the tyrant.
You gotta watch that Torah diversity thing. Next thing you know, somebody will say that unsaved infidels are not subhuman.
Upshot: No non-Hebrew text of Torah is Divine. It's all too human.
So, either read it in the original, or admit that your faith has only a shallow, surface link to the Hebrew Bible. Catholic or descendant of Catholics, just admit that you are happy with the neo-pagan theology that humans made up at the Council of Trent, etc.
If you want to follow-up on this challenge to the accuracy of non-Hebrew Torah, there are dozens of good books. I'm too busy documenting how the dictionaries, too, are full of uninformed garbage.
Nothing personal of course.
Blessings from our God who wants moral action more than authentic theology, Isaac
