As a metaphor for the whole planet (Deut. 32:8), Israel had 12 different
tribes. Only one of those tribes was "chosen" to serve the others
ritually, and to teach the Torah. On the surface it looks like Levi
gets a raw deal. Levi does not get any land to work, just some
Levitical cities, ghettos, to live in. The only thing they "earn" is
from their services to the other tribes.
Similarly, the Jews
in the Diaspora were landless, and lived in ghettos, surviving as
merchants,
etc. Their true role was to influence the nations around them. In
many fields the Jews DID fulfil HaShem's role. English Common Law, the
American Constitution, or the sane aspects of other religions -- all
came to be because of Jews introducing ideas from HaShem's Torah.
Leviites
are no better than Gadites or Ephraimites. But HaShem gave the tribes
different job descriptions. Similarly, the distinct role of the Jews
should not be mistaken for elevated distinction. The Jews are mere
clerics and teachers. Government workers.
But at least their employer is impressive: HaShem,
Choosing
(as Noahides do) is way more impressive than being born "chosen" (as
the Jews are) . Jews only got chosen in the merit of the great Bnai
Noah Abram and Sara.
Only later would they be hired as Abraham and Sarah of HaShem's P.R. agency. (A tiny outfit with a
checkered career and a thankless job, but at least lifetime contracts.)
The
best sign that the Jews did their job will be the "Levites" chosen for
Temple III from among the choosing Noahides (Isaiah 66). To get there
from here, both we Levites (Jews) and you blessed Israelites (Bnai
Noah) must do a lot of good work to nudge atheists and neo-pagans
towards Torah.
As we celebrate 5771 years since Adam an Eve, let us pray and work towards a successful step towards this goal.
